Tamil Movie Based on Caste System – Part 1

Pariyerum Perumal

One of the most strongest and direct cast movies of all time. Won a number of awards and gained millions of people’s hearts. Directed by Mari Selvaraj in 2018. This movie is about Pariyan, a law student belonging to a lower caste, who falls in love with Jothi, a girl from an upper caste. And the struggle he faces from the girl’s family just because of caste. Starring Kathy, Yogi Babu, Anandhi, G Marimuthu and Lijeesh. 

Kabali

This Rajiikanth’s movie created huge expectations before it was released in 2016, however director Pa. Ranjith failed to fulfil fans. Starring Rajinikanth, Radhika Apte, Dhansika and more.

Kaala

Not a bad gangster, but a guy constantly fights with politicians to keep the land of his slum. Starring Rajinikanth, Nana Patekar, Easwari Rao, Huma Qureshi, which was directed by Pa. Ranjith. The movie was a flop. 

Muthal Mariyathai

Story about a slightly old upper-caste man, who is living an unhappy marriage life. Was seeking for a proper love and care, found good friendship with a low-caste woman. However this news leads to rumours as they are in love. Directed by Bharathiraja and acted by Sivaji Ganesan, Radha, Vadivukarasi, Sathyaraj. Movie was released in 1985. 

Thevar Magan

Starring Kamal Hassan, Sivaji Ganesan, Nassar, Gautami, Revathi and more. The well educated Saktivelu (played by Kamal Hassan) returns to India and wants to open a chain of restaurants in Town. His father (Sivaji Ganesan), however, wishes that he would stay back and help the villagers. Movie directed by Bharathan.

Bharathi Kannamma

Released in 1997, this movie was directed by Cheran. Story about Parthiban, who works for a rich man, and Meena, the daughter of a rich landlord, fall in love. Meena commits suicide by burning herself as she cannot marry Parthiban because of their caste difference. Starring Parthiban, Meena, Vijayakumar, Senthil and Ranjith.

Chinna Gounder

Directed by RV Udayakumar, this movie was released in 1991. Story about a village head from slightly upper caste who gets married to a lower caste girl. Starring Vijayakanth, Manorama, Sukanya, Salim Ghouse, Gaundamani, Senthil and Vadivelu.

Marumalarchi

Starring Mammooty, Devayani, Manorama, Mansoor Ali Khan and more. This movie has a very similar story and Chinna Gounder. Directed by K Bharathi and this movie was released in 1998.

Nattamai

Not directly a caste based movie. However there are scenes where it touched on caste systems. Story about a village head, who is revered by all, leads a content life with his family. Starring Sarathkumar, Vijayakumar, Meena, Goundamani, Senthil and more

Ejamaan

Again it is not a direct caste movie, however the whole upper caste and lower caste were shown in this movie. Starring Rajinikanth, Manorama, Meena, MN Nambiar, Gaundamani and Senthil. Directed by RV Udayakumar in 1993.
