1. Alai Payuthey

Story about a couple Karthik (Madhavan) and Shakti (Shalini Ajith) get married illegally without their parent’s approval. However, soon the family realise the marriage and go against it. Later Shakti meets in accident. Released in 2000 and directed by Mani Ratnam.

2. Roja

Roja, a village girl from Tamil Nadu, was get married to Rishi, who was kidnapped by terrorist during an undercover mission in Jammu and Kashmir. Then Roja fight all the way to get back her husband. Brilliant performance by Arvind Swamy, Madhoo, Nassar, Janagaraj and directed by Mani Ratnam.

3. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa

Simbhu, who is an assistant director, falls in love with Trisha, who is a Christian girl from traditional family. But after Karthik become busy during his movie shoot, things go wrong. Directed by Gautham Menon in 2010.

4. Kaadhal

Directed by Balaji Sakthivel, and starring Bharath, Sandhya, Kadhal Dhandapani. This movie won numerous awards for best direction and story. Story about two young lovers, from poor and wealthy family. Then run away and get married. However things get really bad when the girl’s father get to know.

5. Mouna Ragam

Story about a young girl, who secretly mourns the death of her boy friend. She was forced to agree to arranged marriage and faces marriage issues after that. Another movie in this list by Mani Ratnam, which was released in 1986. This move is acted by Revathi, Mohan, Karthik, Janagaraj.

6. Madrasapattinam

A. L. Vijay’s Madrasapattinam is about a love story during independence time in India. Wife of English governor falls in love with a Indian village man. They run away, but some how get caught and she was sent back to London. After she was aged, she visit India back to meet her long-lost boy friend. Starring Arya, Amy Jackson, Nassar and more, released in 2010.

7. Sillunu Oru Kadhal

Released in 2006, this movie was famous because of Suriya and Jyothika, was were in love in their real life. Starring Suriya, Jyothika, Bhumika Chawla, Vadivelu, directed by Krishna. Music composed by AR Rahman.

8. Kadhal Kottai

The benchmark for romantic-love story is this movie – Kadhal Kottai. The very first tamil movie won National Award in 1996. Directed by Agathiyan and starring Ajith, Devayani, Heera, Thalaivasal Vijay. Story about a couple who fall in love without seeing each other through love letters. Finally they decided to meet and it was shocking for Kamali.

9. Raja Rani

Story about a couple, who who dislike each other, are forced to get married and lead troubled lives (similar story as Mouna Ragam). The director was trolled on social media during to stollen story without giving credits to the original makes. Starring Arya, Nayanthara, Jai, Nazriya Nazim, Santhanam and directed by Atlee.

10. Muthal Mariyathai

Story about slightly old upper-caste man, who is living an unhappy marriage life. Was seeking for a proper love and care, found good friendship with a low-caste woman. However this news leads to rumours as they are in love. Directed by Bharathiraja and acted by Sivaji Ganesan, Radha, Vadivukarasi, Sathyaraj. Movie was released in 1985.
